Key to your Ki- Pj Hirabayashi

Tap into your ki (energy) with activities that will build awareness, activate individual and group ki, and erase the boundaries between players and the audience. The workshop will challenge participants in movement, rhythm, timing and improvisational skills, all without using taiko…the ki to becoming a better taiko player.

All levels of experience are welcome.

Basics to Composition- Roy Hirabayashi

Writing a new song or improvising a solo follows the same basic fundamental concepts. The basic dos and don’ts of composing are covered in this workshop format through a descriptive process with volunteers from the workshop to participate in various activities to help demonstrate the key points. No prior composing experience is necessary.

All levels of experience are welcome.

Miyake (Advanced)- Shigeru Watanabe

Miyake Taiko is a traditional Japanese Taiko drumming style that has developed as a music in Miyake-island, an island of the Izu Island chain, locating at 180km south of Tokyo. During a traditional festival, Gozu Tenno Sai, the people on Miyake-island play Miyake Taiko from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and carry the portable shrine around the town.

Simple rhythm and powerful beat. Basically, the sound of Miyake Taiko is composed of only 3 straightforward rhythm patterns so that it does not require any musical scores. And also, it is distinguished form other taiko style by its quick and powerful beat. The intensity of the beat is described that the heads of drums used for Miyake Taiko must be changed once a year though those used for other taiko styles usually changed once in every 10 years. Through the years as a festival music, these two aspects have grown into the powerful and exciting groove of Miyake Taiko nowadays.

 

Taiko Set- Kenny Endo

The practice and performance techniques of playing multiple taiko with be covered in this workshop, among them:  basic grooves, independence, soloing, traditional Japanese rhythms, and accompanying.

You finally have Taiko! Great! Having the stand to support your equipment at the right height and angle. I will teach how to make 4 basic stands to achieve more versatility in playing styles.

Odaiko Fundamentals- Isaku Kageyama

This workshop will be a basic introduction to the fundamentals of playing Odaiko. We will explore grip, stance, stroke, as well as tips that will improve your overall sound and form. Participants can expect tocome out of this workshop with a better idea of how to play Odaiko in both a solo and ensemble setting.

Introductory Taiko for Youth-  Mark H. Rooney

This dynamic workshop is a fun and exciting way to introduce taiko to children of all ages! Basics for kumidaiko (group drumming) as well as cultural context are taught through interactive exercises and games. Aimed at specific age groups or a wide range, this workshop can be adjusted to suit the abilities and intentions of the group.

Open to ages 7+

Naname/diagonal stance: Whip, torque and the absence of tension for resonant ‘kara’ and strong ‘don’- Stuart Paton

Welcome!   We will bring out the sounds of the skin and fuchi as we work on stance, palm orientation, elbow flight paths, and different approaches to grips.  Add power through acceleration, relaxation, and torque.

All levels of experience are welcome.

Taiko Fundamentals- Kaoru Watanabe

Based on almost 20 years of experience playing taiko, including 8 years with the internationally acclaimed KODO drummers performing such signature pieces as Miyake, Yatai Bayashi, Chonlima, and Zoku, Kaoru Watanabe will introduce some hitting techniques utilized by many Kodo players that emphasizes balance and stability, relaxation, the shoulder blades as well as the concept of magaranai ude or the “unbendable arm”. Kaoru stresses on keeping the body relaxed in order to best utilize the natural strengths and energies preexisting in the body. Rather than teach particular pieces, Kaoru will deal with taikofundamentals in a way that the techniques can be readily applied to virtually any taiko style.

Group Drumming: Performing Taiko in an Ensemble– Soh Daiko

This workshop will test participants’ skills in the ensemble aspect of a taiko performance.  Emphasizing the kumi in kumi-daiko (group drumming), we will use various simple song structures to learn listening and communicating while playing taiko with others.  We aim to build skills in playing together on time, supporting soloists, engaging others and the art of “jamming” in a taiko performance

We Can Talk Anything Through: Cultivating a positive communication culture in your taiko group- RAW

Do you sometimes feel frustrated, stuck, angry, stifled, torn, or misunderstood in your taiko group? Do you need more tools to communicate, problem-solve, and foster a sense of togetherness? This interactive workshop will present some ideas and skills based on Non-Violent Communication (NVC), a practice that aims to maximize empathy and clarity, and minimize pain and misunderstanding. The tools are simple enough so that anyone can start using them right away, and complex enough that you could practice a lifetime and still get better at.
In a taiko group context, communicating better means a more efficient and equitable group, with members feeling more valued, understood, and empowered to be themselves. It can also translate into deeper connections and better performance. The workshop welcomes people of all ages and experience. Expect some listening, some sharing, and some guided experimenting.
